- Basics of ultrasound: physics, equipment, and machine settings
- Sonoanatomy of hands/wrists, ankles/feet, and knees
- Typical normal sonographic appearances: joint, cartilage, bone, tendon
- Typical sonographic appearances in disease (synovitis, erosions, osteophytes, tenosynovitis, effusions, crystals): RA, OA, Gout, Pseudogout
- Differences between PD and CD: when to use?
- Applications, indications, and limitations of MSK US
- US guided injection procedures
- Image documentation and report writing
Practical
- Supervised scanning and how to use the equipment-optimisation of settings
- Standardised scan of wrists/hand (live demo) followed by practical and pathological patients
- Standardised scan of ankle/foot (live demo) followed by practical and pathological patients
- Standardised scan of knees (live demo) followed by practical pathological patients
- US guided injection procedures (live demo) followed by practical

Dr Qasim Akram
Consultant Rheumatologist & Course Director,

Qasim is Course Director for the RUC and is a Consultant Rheumatologist based at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. He is an international fellowship trained EULAR Level 2 Ultrasound Instructor and has a wealth of experience using ultrasound in his day-to-day rheumatology practice. He is an active member of the British Society of Rheumatology (BSR) Ultrasound Special Interest Group (SIG). He teaches ultrasound regularly at an international, national (including BSR), and regional level. He is very passionate about delivering standardised high quality ultrasound training and enhancing the utilisation of ultrasound to enhance patient care amongst his peers in the North West region and throughout the UK.

He is invited to teach ultrasound at rheumatology meetings on a regular basis.

Sarang is a fellowship trained Consultant Rheumatologist, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. He has been the lead for the BSR Ultrasound SIG for several years and has been responsible for organising and running BSR Ultrasound Courses. He holds an EFSUMB Level 3 Certification in Rheumatology Ultrasound at Wrightington has been recently recognised as a EULAR Centre for Ultrasound Imaging.
